It was lucky that I checked this device with a multimeter before the first use. There was NO EARTH pass through. This fault was quickly traced to the output socket where the earth wire was clamped on the wire insulation. Easily fixed, but should have been picked up during QC checks...... lol The speed control is a little too logarithmic for my liking. Most of the speed change occurs in the last 15% of knob rotation.
