Q: can this run off a battery?

David Voltage is not your issue. the system runs on ~5V your issue will be current draw, to turn on all the LED's you will need to supply ~10amps of power, if you want to use a battery pack to power this unit make sure that the C rate and the mAh of the pack can deliver enough instentanious current to drive the LED's.
