Q: can the button also be powered at 12v?

Heliguy Yes it will work at 12 volts but I only use the low setting and it is HOT. Hotter than the high setting if using a 5 Volt power bank.

I built these into a vest with 4 upright across the lower back and 2 sideways above the 4. The remaining 2 I installed at the vest pockets, these provide heat for the lower front and hands when in pockets. I have a 12 volt input in one pocket and a buck voltage converter (also purchased here) to 5 volts in the other pocket. On 12 volts the units are quite hot on the low setting and on 5 volts they are hot on high and warm on the lower settings. A 3 cel 2200mah lipo lasts about 1 hour on 12 volts and about 3 hours through the converter on 5 volts. I also made a wire with a cigarette lighter and battery clips to run the unit from a car or golf cart (battery clips). The converter allows up to 36 volts input so anything up to and including a 6 cell lipo can be used.

Works on some things but only controls the very top speed slightly. Try to slow it down and it shuts off what you are trying to control. Will not reduce speed of my Dremel tool which is a brushed motor as per the advertising.

Tested on a number of sizes of wire including double wires. Works great on all. Future work will be much easier and a lot faster. Easy to adjust for different sizes of wire and also for length of stripped section.
