I had the previous version (the one with body made from bent stainless steel) for some years, and this one is a considerable upgrade. No more screwing around with bolts every time blade needs to be turned, the quick-turning mechanism on this one makes the whole sharpening process so much more enjoyable. Also the plastic rod guide is probably the second most important upgrade. Rod glides smoothly with almost no play and doesn't bind at all. Main body, stone holders and arm, rod guide body and stoppers are from cast aluminum. Rods, bolts and blade holder plates are stainless. Handle is made out of plastic, has a matt finish that feels comfortable to use and gives a good grip. Included instructions are easy to follow and well illustrated and detailed. Included was also a box for stones that could hold 8 stones with no base, and about 4 with base. A very nice touch, as previously it was quite irritating to carry all my stones in a bag or wrapped inside a rag. Delivered in this carry bag, there was still plenty of room for extra parts, ie. extra stones, rag, small strop. It took only a minute or two to assemble and set up, so that is also a big plus. Had to make some minor tweaks, as there were few spots that had leftovers from casting. Blade holder plates had very sharp edges, probably due to stamping process, but a quick touch up with a fine diamond lap smoothed them out. Otherwise I have absolutely nothing to complain about this sharpener, works great, fast and easy to use and set up. Included stones gives a good starting point, but I recommend also getting a set of diamond stones at some point.
